Flying to London – dated 5/20/10

Julia and I are all set! Sitting in Dulles awaiting our overnight flight to London. I tend to avoid flights to Dulles because of its location but it’s a pretty efficient airport. Traffic was a pain (my packing delays mandated driving during rush hour) but we got to Dulles in around two hours. Not terrible. Checking in our bags and getting through security was a piece of cake. Was sort of hoping the flight would be booked and we could accept a flight tomorrow morning in exchange for a refund…but no dice, they’re taking standbys. At least we’re flying “Economy Plus” with 5 inches more legroom!

My friend Dom, and his girlfriend Louisa, are being incredibly gracious and hosting us in London for the week. Still brainstorming on ways to repay the favor. I studied abroad at University College London in 2005/2006 and haven’t been back to London since. Very excited to go back. I plan to:

  1. pick up a U.K version of The Economist
  2. alternate between The Independent and The Guardian every day to follow recent developments in the new coalition government
  3. see some old “mates” from UCL
  4. show Julia around the city including a slew of art galleries that hopefully accept U.S. student IDs!
  5. Chill out in some of the best city parks in the world on the warmest London weekend of the year

Here’s the plan for the next couple weeks. We’ll be in London from tomorrow until the May 25th We’re doing a quick EasyJet trip over to Berlin for four days and then back in London on the 29th. A friend from Germany has kindly provided a perfect Berlin four-day itinerary that I plan to put to good use. I’ve always wanted to go to Germany, and Berlin especially. The WWII and Cold War history has always intrigued me. Of course, I’m excited to try some German beers in country. We’re back in London for a couple days and then to Accra on May 31st.

Virginia today, England tomorrow!

About to jump on our flight to London
